dinghy manufacture from fibreglass.
I recently started manufacturing fibreglass dinghies. I bought the dinghy mould from a retired boat builder who kindly gave me loads of advice. The first mould already had a shell of a dinghy in the mould. So all I had to do was prize it out of the mould. Easier said than done, as it turned out. After forcing it pouring water between the mould and the shell it eventually popped out! Then I had to fit it out, as they say. I added wood to the gun'ales (the edges) and made lifting eyes, towing eyes, rowlocks, etc., to the dinghy. It looked wonderful. There was a boat jumble event happening nearby, and I had high hopes that the dinghy would sell. Also I would get loads of orders for more dinghies. However, no one bought the dinghy. Lots of interest, lots of advice from "experts", but no sale. A few days later one of the people from the jumble sale telephoned and decided to buy the dinghy. Relief! I had sold my first dinghy and belief in my efforts was restored! The process is fairly simple. The mould is waxed over and over again to provide a barrier between the mould and the new gel coat of the shell. Once the gel coat is applied, several layers of glass fibre mat are built up. Near the keel - the bottom of the dinghy, more layers are built up for strength. Three seats are fibreglassed in position for three adults to sit. Two rowlock positions are available for rowing. The whole dinghy actually looks good when finished. There is also a bracket for an outboard motor to be used, if required. I have now built 3 dinghies and I have had no problem selling them. Each buyer has decided within a few minutes to pay the selling price, no haggling. I am pleased with the results so far. I have also decided to start a website to sell dinghies on ebay. You can access the site by clicking on the link on this page. All types of boating equipment are advertised. The benefit of the link is thet it is focussed on the exact item you are searching for at this time. |
